CATHY SMITH
Cathy
Smith, an historian and scholar of the American West, is best
known for her work on the authentic costumes in "Dances
with Wolves", "Geronimo," "Buffalo Girls,"
and the Emmy award winning "Son of the Morning Star.
Growing
up on a ranch bordering the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation
led to her relentless pursuit of authentic, traditional Native
American designs and techniques, which have become a much
sought after commodity for everyone from international collectors
to Hollywood producers to museum curators.
"Maintaining
these traditional arts is important because they are a part
of our American heritage in danger
of being lost. Not only is the product beautiful and useable,
but if made with integrity, is imbued with power and spiritual
meaning."
Cathy has written extensively, non-fiction as well as screenplays,
consulted on a majority of the western genre films of the
last twelve years, created and designed authentic costumes
for film, western artists, and private clients, and restored
original artifacts for museums and collectors.
Cathy
lectures on Cowboys
& the American West and Plains Indian Art & Culture
at museums and events, from Christies in NY to The SouthWest
Museum in LA. She creates custom clothing and accouterments
not only for film and museums, but for clients worldwide on
a custom basis. Anything can be ordered - from authentic tipi
interiors, to Buffalo Bill's show coat, to the Dances with
Wolves wedding dress.
She has a studio near Galisteo, NM and in Red Lodge, Montana.
